Body Lift
If you’ve lost a significant amount of weight, congratulations! Reclaiming your health is a profound and life-changing achievement — and one that deserves to be reflected in how you look and feel. Unfortunately, major weight loss, pregnancy, aging, and other factors can leave behind stretched abdominal muscles, stubborn localized fat deposits, and loose skin that has lost its elasticity. These changes can obscure the results you’ve worked so hard to achieve and cause both physical discomfort and genuine frustration.
A body lift is a circumferential evolution of the abdominoplasty — extending the recontouring work of a tummy tuck around the entire torso to address the abdomen, flanks, lower back, buttocks, and outer thighs. While a tummy tuck addresses the front of the body, a body lift treats the midsection as a continuous unit, allowing for comprehensive skin tailoring, abdominal muscle repair/tightening, and high definition (HD) liposuction across all regions simultaneously. Fat harvested during liposuction is frequently transferred to the buttocks to restore the volume and projection that significant weight loss or aging can diminish — creating a lifted, shapely posterior rather than simply tightening what remains. The result is a fully integrated surgical plan that addresses the body from all angles: a stronger core, sculpted contours, and a balanced silhouette.
Dr. John Luck, a Johns Hopkins-trained plastic surgeon , approaches each body lift as a work of surgical craftsmanship, custom-designed around each patient’s unique anatomy and aesthetic goals. What Concerns Can a Body Lift Improve?
A body lift is uniquely suited to patients whose concerns go beyond what diet, exercise, or non-surgical treatments can resolve. The most common issues we address include:
- Separated core muscles (rectus diastasis) that cause a rounded or protruding midsection despite strong muscles and minimal abdominal fat — a concern that is especially common following pregnancy or massive weight loss, and one that can only be corrected with surgical muscle tightening.
- Excess or inelastic skin around the abdomen, flanks, lower back, buttocks, and outer thighs that sags, folds, or causes chafing, irritation, and hygiene challenges.
- Irregular fat distribution that persists despite weight loss — pockets of stubborn fat in areas like the saddle bags or thighs that can distort the body’s natural contours and prevent a truly sculpted result.
- Volume loss in the buttocks, which commonly accompanies major weight loss and can leave the buttock profile appearing deflated and/or saggy. Through liposuction and fat transfer, Dr. Luck can safely augment buttock projection and improve its shape using patients’ own fat harvested during the same procedure.
- Stretch marks located within the areas of skin planned for removal.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Body Lift?
A body lift is not a weight loss procedure — it is a body transformation procedure for patients who are already at a stable, healthy weight but are left with physical changes that cannot be resolved without surgery. Ideal candidates typically:
- Have maintained a stable weight for at least six months and are committed to sustaining it long-term.
- Are in good overall health, free of uncontrolled medical conditions, and are non-smokers or willing to stop smoking well in advance of surgery and throughout recovery.
- Have realistic expectations about outcomes, including the nature and placement of scars, which are an inherent part of any body lift but are carefully planned to remain discreet.
Types of Body Lift
A body lift is not a single operation but a customized combination of procedures — which may include a tummy tuck, outer thigh lift, buttock lift/augmentation, back lift, or belt lift, among others — selected and sequenced based on what each patient would benefit most from. HD liposuction and autologous fat transfer are frequently incorporated to refine contours and restore volume where it has been lost.
Lower Body Lift/Belt Lipectomy
A lower body lift is our most comprehensive lower-body recontouring procedure, addressing the abdomen, flanks, hips, buttocks, and outer thighs in a single surgical plan. This procedure is essentially a circumferential abdominoplasty — often including rectus diastasis repair to tighten and restore the abdominal wall — combined with skin tailoring and soft tissue repositioning across the lower torso. This procedure is often also referred to as a belt lift or a belt lipectomy.
Where appropriate, HD liposuction is used to sculpt and define rather than simply reduce, creating athletic contours and smooth transitions between regions. Fat harvested during liposuction can be transferred to the buttocks to restore projection and shape, eliminating the flatness that often accompanies significant weight loss. The result is a lower body that is not just smaller and tighter, but sculpted and shaped with a stronger core, lifted posterior, and a silhouette that reflects the full extent of your transformation.
Back Lift
Excess skin along the upper and mid-back — the rolls that persist along the bra line or lower back regardless of weight loss — is among the most difficult aesthetic concerns to address non-surgically, and among the most impactful to correct. A back lift removes this redundant tissue, tightens the remaining skin, and creates a smoother, more contoured posterior profile. Incisions are placed along natural creases or positioned to remain concealed beneath undergarments. HD liposuction or Lipo 360 is frequently incorporated to further refine the area and enhance overall back definition.
What is the Body Lift Recovery Period Like?
Because a body lift addresses multiple regions simultaneously, recovery is more involved than a single-area procedure and typically requires two weeks away from work and routine activities, depending on the scope of your plan and the physical demands of your lifestyle. Swelling, bruising, and temporary discomfort are expected during the initial healing phase and are managed with prescribed medications and compression garments.
Patients are encouraged to begin light walking the day of surgery to support circulation and reduce the risk of complications. Strenuous activity and heavy lifting should be avoided for several weeks. Although Dr. Luck performs drainless body lifts in appropriate candidates, some patients may require temporary surgical drains to prevent fluid accumulation. Final contours emerge gradually as swelling resolves over the following months, and scars — while initially firm and pink — typically soften and fade significantly over time. Careful adherence to post-operative instructions is essential to a smooth recovery and the best possible outcome.
