Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy for Hair Growth
Many of our patients at Gryskiewicz Twin Cities Cosmetic Surgery experience hair loss or hair thinning, a cosmetic concern that can often be addressed using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy—a cutting-edge hair restoration technique that requires no surgery or excessive downtime. While PRP therapy is used for a variety of aesthetic purposes, including reduction of visible signs of aging, this revelatory treatment has also been proven to catalyze inactive hair follicles for noticeably thicker and fuller hair in areas of sparse hair growth. Our experienced plastic surgeon, Joe Gryskiewicz, MD—or simply, “Dr. Joe”—offers platelet-rich plasma therapy at his Burnsville-area office to increase hair growth in treated regions using your own natural growth factors.
Aided by precise micro-needling techniques, the PRP process takes advantage of the platelet-rich plasma found in your blood and utilizes its cell-reinvigorating properties to achieve benefits, such as:
- Stimulation of inactive hair follicles
- Increased hair count
- Thickening of hairs
- Prolonged growth phase of hair cycle
What is Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy?
Platelet-rich plasma therapy is an innovative means of stem cell stimulation that is commonly utilized for medical reasons, as well as aesthetic purposes. Your blood consists of plasma, which contains a plethora of natural growth factors that play a role in soft-tissue repair and the regeneration of new cells. When platelet-rich plasma is separated from whole blood, the result is a condensed, plasma-based concentrate that can be used to trigger cell growth in a process called PRP therapy. This versatile and minimally invasive treatment can rejuvenate the skin, correct facial volume deficits, reduce wrinkling, and diminish many other signs of aging. When applied towards hair restoration, PRP therapy can revitalize dormant hair follicles to increase the amount, as well as the prominence, of hair in the treated region(s).
How Does PRP Therapy for Hair Loss Work?
Many patients can reactivate their natural hair growth pattern through gentle application of platelet-rich plasma into targeted regions. To accomplish this, a small amount of a patient’s own blood is extracted in order to isolate platelet-rich plasma from whole blood. Once the plasma concentrate is separated and properly prepared, the resulting PRP serum can be reintroduced into areas of sparse hair growth. The serum is delivered into targeted depths of the scalp through an injection process assisted by micro-needling, which uses a special handheld device equipped with very fine needles to create micro-channels from which the PRP can travel to hair follicles. The platelet-rich plasma then works to reactivate healthy but dormant follicles, allowing many individuals to experience regenerated hair growth as well as a thickening of the hair.
While PRP therapy from our medical spa can effectively repair and reinvigorate inactive hair follicles, it cannot create new hair growth where there is an absence of hair follicles at the target site. During a consultation, Dr. Joe can examine your scalp and determine whether PRP therapy can fulfill your hair restoration goals.
How is the PRP Procedure Performed?
To begin the PRP procedure, Dr. Joe will extract a small amount of blood. He will then isolate the platelet-rich plasma from the whole blood supply through a centrifugation system, yielding a plasma-based concentrate that is carefully collected and prepared for use. The PRP serum is subsequently injected into areas of the scalp planned for treatment. The next phase of the process involves a micro-needling procedure, in which a handheld device with ultra-fine needles is run across regions where hair is thinning or balding to further stimulate cell repair. Though patients typically report minimal discomfort throughout treatment, a local anesthetic can be applied to numb the area if desired. Depending on your unique needs and cosmetic goals, many patients achieve optimal results through a series of treatments spaced one month apart.
What is Recovery Like for PRP Treatment?
As a minimally invasive treatment, PRP therapy is generally performed on an outpatient basis and patients can usually return to normal activities immediately following the procedure. A mild sensation similar to a sunburn may be experienced in the days following treatment; however, this should dissipate with time and there is typically no extensive recovery period associated with PRP therapy.
What are the Results of PRP Therapy?
Patients usually notice a gradual restoration of their normal hair growth pattern as the plasma injections allow their inactive hair follicles to function properly. Results can often be seen within the first couple of months, although multiple treatment sessions generally provide the most dramatic enhancement.
