Symptoms of Labial Hypertrophy
November 25, 2024
“Labial hypertrophy” is a condition in which excess genital tissue causes discomfort from friction, tugging, or stretching. Whether the labia is naturally enlarged at birth or elongates over time due to pregnancy and aging, no patient should feel like their anatomy is abnormal or unnatural. That said, excess tissue in the intimate areas can affect many aspects of daily life.
Although labial hypertrophy is not considered dangerous and immediate medical attention isn’t necessary, an enlarged labia may cause discomfort, pain, chronic infections, or other difficult symptoms. If you feel like your quality of life is being negatively affected by stretched labial tissue, you may consider a surgical procedure to address the following:
- Pain or discomfort caused by twisting and tugging of excess tissue
- Difficulty riding a bike, using tampons, having intercourse, etc.
- Hygiene issues caused by enlarged labia
- Repeated UTIs (urinary tract infections)
- Self-consciousness or embarrassment in certain types of clothing
- Sexual dysfunction
When performed by an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon in Minneapolis, labiaplasty can effectively recontour excess labial tissue to enhance both aesthetics and comfort. Not only can the procedure trim enlarged labia causing discomfort, but labiaplasty can also help alleviate embarrassment or insecurity in intimate situations or while wearing form-fitting clothing.
This procedure can be performed at our office under local anesthesia. Patients arrive 30 minutes prior to their procedure and can go home shortly after the procedure is finished. Dr. Gryskiewicz prescribes medications to take prior to arrival to ensure comfortability during the procedure.
